Celebrate Her Majesty's 60-Year British Reign
June 2nd and 3rd, 2012 is the the diamond jubilee in London, England, which marks 60 years of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's reign over the British Commonwealth. ABC news filmed Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee Speech to Parliament.
Queen Elizabeth became the Queen of England February 6th, 1952, however her coronation wasn't until the next year on June 2nd, 1953. The Diamond Jubilee celebrates 60 years from her designation as Queen, not from her coronation.
How is the Diamond Jubilee Celebrated?
The Diamond Jubilee is organized by Buckingham Palace to commemorate the years Queen Elizabeth has ruled over England and the Commonwealth. This year, according to the oficial website of the British Monarchy, "the Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh will mark the Diamond Jubilee with a series of regional visits and engagements throughout the United Kingdom." These visits began March 29th and will run until July 19th, 2012.
This year's tour of the United Kingdom will include Wales, most of England, Scotland, and other members of the Monarchy will participate in a Jubilee Pageant, a 3-night event of performances and feasts. The Central Weekend is the main event of the Jubilee. It will take place June 2nd-5th and will be arranged by Buckingham Palace.
Her Majesty's Silver and Golden Jubilees
According to the official website of The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, "the Queen's Silver Jubilee marked the 25th anniversary of her accession to the throne, where the theme of the Jubilee was the 'unity of the nation."
Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee was celebrated in 1977, followed by a tour of the UK, ceremonies and visits with family. 2002 was her Golden Jubilee - the 50th anniversary of her Majesty's accession. The Golden Jubilee marks 50 years.
King George III marked a Golden Jubilee in 1809. Queen Victoria marked a Golden Jubilee in 1887 and a Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Both of her Jubilees were quite extravagant with parades and feasts. King George V had a Silver Jubilee in 1937 and celebrated with a month-long festival.
Her Majesty's Speech to Parliament
Queen Elizabeth gave a speech to parliament prior to her tours throughout England and the Commonwealth. Here are a few excepts from her official speech. ABC News reported that she said, "Prince Philip is, I believe, well known for declining compliments of any kind. But throughout he has been a constant strength and guide. During these years as your queen, the support of my family has, across the generations, been beyond measure."
Her Majesty also said, "in an era when the regular, worthy rhythm of life is less eye-catching than doing something extraordinary, I am reassured that I am merely the second sovereign to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee," claiming that she is thankful, grateful and appreciative of her years as Queen and her support throughout her reign of 60 years.
If you are interested in watching her Majesty's complete speech to Parliament, The Telegraph has posted the full speech.
